Hormone Pellets
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone pellets are the premier way of delivering bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Hormone pellets provide a more effective, more convenient delivery method for a number of reasons.

Hormone Pellet Therapy is the only method of hormone replacement therapy that provides sustained hormone levels throughout the day, for many months, without any “roller coaster” effect.  Remembering to rub on your cream or take a daily pill are a thing of the past — you can now get a pellet implanted and forget about it for the next several months! Because you never deal with hormone fluctuations and your levels remain steady, you will find that with pellets you feel your best. We often have patients switch off oral or topical products onto pellets, we almost never have patients switch from pellets to oral or topical formulas because they feel so great.

Hormone pellet therapy uses hormones derived from natural plant sources to replicate the body’s normal hormonal levels. These hormone implants, placed under the skin after applying a local anesthetic, consistently release small, physiologic doses of hormones, providing optimal therapy that remains consistent throughout the month.

The dosage of the hormones is personalized for each patient using symptoms, lab work age, gender, weight, and health goals— so that you will look and feel your best, while reducing potential side effects and optimizing the many health benefits of hormone replacement therapy.

What is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?

Bioidentical hormones are hormones that are molecularly identical to the hormones your body produces. The hormones are made from plant extracts and they come in very small particles (“micronized”) to allow for better absorption. The hormones can be prescribed as creams, patches, pellets, injections and through pills. At Nutima Integrative Medicine, the providers use screening lab work, your unique health history and physical exam, and your individualized preferences on the various formulations to develop a customized treatment plan for you.

How will bioidentical hormone therapies help you?

As you age, your testicles or ovaries gradually produce less and less sex hormones. For male-bodied individuals, decreased testosterone leads to the loss of muscle mass, increased fat tissue, lowered energy and sex drive, less erectile function, more sleep issues and increased risk of certain diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and dementias. For female-bodied individuals, less estrogen, progesterone and testosterone leads to hot flashes, night sweats, lowered sex drive, atrophy of the pelvic tissues (which leads to fragile vulvar skin, painful sex, increased urinary tract infections, incontinence and organ prolapse), mood swings, insomnia, lowered energy and an increased risk for heart disease, depression, dementias and certain types of cancer. For transgender and gender-non-conforming individuals, hormone pellets can be a life-changing therapy for their transition goals.

How is bioidentical hormone therapy different from conventional hormone preparations?

For many years, synthetic hormone preparations (such as progestins and conjugated equine estrogens) were believed to be equivalent in their benefits and risks when compared to natural, bioidentical counterparts. While more research is needed to fully understand each of the various preparations, the data is accumulating that there are important differences. Synthetic progestins are now mostly understood to be inferior to bioidentical progesterone. Synthetic progestins are more associated with many of the negative side effects associated with hormone replacement therapy, including increased risks of cardiovascular disease, dementia and breast cancer (1). Researchers are also beginning to learn that the different types of bioidentical estrogens (E1, E2 and E3) have different physiologic effects on different tissues and offer unique therapeutic effects (1). Individualized bioidentical hormone replacement therapy allows customized formulations that fit the needs of the patient, not the convenience of drug manufacturers.
